Mercedes Sosa, one of Latin America’s most important voices, passed away today, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her songs were full of emotion and carried messages in favor of justice, peace and equity. Exiled in Spain for four years during the Argentine dictatorship, she learnt how to build transnational bridges of solidarity with her talent and disposition to collaborate with other artists.
Singer-songwriter Antonio Tarragó Ros said of La Negra: ”Mercedes was a generous being, she had no evilness and her presence was a necessity for all of us who acted or recorded with her”.
Here’s a famous song, Sólo le pido a Dios, recorded live with León Geico in 1984. The video includes subtitles in English, enjoy.
